It’s very satisfying giving a homemade gift that not only will the recipient really like, but that’s healthy too! This simple idea of a seed jar: layering seeds, nuts (chopped or whole) and or dried fruit is suitable for children of all ages. I love seeds and nuts sprinkled over porridge for breakfast or over a big leafy green salad for lunch.
You probably have the odd old jam jar floating about at home or you can pick up a pretty glass jar pretty inexpensively – give it a good clean and you are ready to go!
Seeds e.g. Pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, chia seeds
Nuts e.g. Hazelnuts, almonds, pine nuts, walnuts
Dried fruit e.g. cranberries, goji berries, raisins
- Layer up your ingredients to the top of the jar or mix in a bowl and pour in
- Seal your seed jar tightly
Tip: small seeds with fall down through larger sized pieces below so in order to keep distinct layers keep similar sized nuts and seeds together. Also consider the colour of your ingredients. If your jar is small stick to smaller sized ingredients.
How kids can help:
- Everything! Just watch nut sizes and of course any allergens with young children
