Heirloom Tomato Salad – So Colourful!

Heirloom Tomato Salad

Kids love colourful food – we know. This doesn’t necessarily mean more work for those of us preparing their food. It is such a pretty sight right now in my local fruit and veggie shop and these beautiful heirloom tomatoes are divine….

I served this heirloom tomato salad for Poppy’s Christening as well as a recent catering job and everyone commented on how delicious they were – and they were the easiest thing in the world to prepare!

A couple of perfectly ripe heirloom tomatoes in colours of your choice

A drizzle of olive oil

A sprinkling of lemon juice

A grind of pepper

Basil leaves for garnish

  • Wash and dry your tomatoes
  • Thinly slice
  • Arrange on a plate
  • Drizzle a little olive oil, a sprinkling of lemon juice and a grind of pepper
  • Garnish with basil leaves

Options: You could add slices of mozarella to your arrangement for a proper tri-colour salad

How kids can help:

  • Selecting the tomatoes in the shop – looking for ripeness and colour
  • Arranging the tomatoes on a plate
  • If you use mozzarella this can usually be cut with a kids friendly blunt knife
  • Drizzling with oil, lemon juice and grinding a little pepper
  • Picking basil from your window garden for garnish
